Le Havre - Dakar, Partager la Mémoire
Exhibition at the Museum of Natural History of Le Havre (FR)
June - December 2017
For the first time, a selection of objects from two major Senegalese museums, the Théodore Monod Museum and the new Museum of Black Civilizations, as well as works from four French museums (Lyon, Angoulême, Périgueux, La Rochelle) are gathered within the same exhibition. A tour dedicated to the cultural heritage, art and history of Senegal and its sub-regions enriched by a corpus of contemporary works whose selection and artistic direction have been entrusted to artness.
Articulated around the richness, antiquity and deep meaning of the traditional arts of West Africa, the exhibition questions: how to highlight the symbolic, social and religious meaning of an object, how to restore to it its "Word"?
At the same time, contemporary artistic creation, illustrated by photography, textile sculpture or video and performative installation, irrigates the exhibition path and thus testifies to a lively artistic scene with many faces.
